WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO PLANT-BASED?

I was chronically depressed and suicidal after losing my father, mother, brother and close friend within a short period of time. With help from a healer, he talked me back into the source of my pain and I was able to release so much mental and emotional suffering through forgiveness.
It was a soul-deep and profound shift in how I viewed the world. I felt so grateful to be relieved from such intense personal suffering, I meditated on how I could give this to others – how could I contribute to less suffering in the world? In the meditation, it came to me – stop eating animals. I quit drinking, smoking, doing drugs and became vegan that day.

WHAT HEALTH BENEFITS HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED SINCE GOING PLANT-BASED?

Most people talk about the physical health benefits of a PB diet, but to me, the much greater impact was the effect on my mental, emotional and spiritual health. The effects were life changing. As if I was a whole new person.

DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR APPROACH TO PLANT-BASED EATING, I.E. LOW-FAT, HIGH-CARB, KETO, ETC.?

I experimented with more and more changes to my diet to experience the effects on my body, mind and spirit. From going completely whole food, to 100% raw for 4 years, to fruitarian for over a year. I realized it changed my experience of reality to such a degree, that it became more difficult to communicate with others, especially those who had not yet tried these dietary changes themselves.
So, to re-socialize myself, with a genuine desire to be of better help to others, I began including more grounding foods like cooked foods. I still eat mostly whole food and a lot of raw fruits (still my preferred food group), with a emphasis on nutrient density, high fiber and antioxidants/phytonutrient rich fruits and greens.

Where do you get
your protein?

DO YOU COUNT CALORIES, AND IF SO, HOW MANY DO YOU CONSUME ON A DAILY BASIS?

Nope. I have for bodybuilding competitions. Now I just use intuitive eating and bio-feedback, “listening” to the way my body responds to what I eat. I have a great relationship with my body, like we are best of friends. If more people would treat their body like their best friend, they could learn so much and have the body that they want.

Do you adhere to a particular macro nutrient split?

No. I focus more on nutrient density and eating good quality foods. If I gain weight, I eat less and do more cardio. It is really that simple and easy once you get used to it.

Give an example of a typical day’s eating?

In your opinion, what are the key differences between achieving one’s ideal physique with plant-based eating comparative to an omnivorous diet?

You are not killing yourself, you are not killing animals and you are not destroying the environment.

Your body heals, repairs and recovers faster and more completely.

Longevity, both in life and muscular maintenance.

How would you recommend someone considering a plant-based diet starts out?

Educate yourself well and don’t let fear hold you back from making bigger changes.

Understand and trust the process. Give your body time to tear down the inferior cells and replace them with healthier ones. In the beginning, you may feel like crap, lose weight, lose muscle and feel exhausted as your body shifts to healing, repairing and replacing tissues.

What exercise or sporting activities do you engage in?

Weight training, cardio mostly. Walking on the beach and parks often and when I can, hiking in the mountains.

Do you follow a particular body part training split in the gym or at home?

No. I change up my workouts every 2-4 weeks. If you don’t change, neither will your body. It adapts to changes.

What does a typical workout comprise of?

I don’t do typical. I do super slows, super sets, giants, 3 second holds, max contract, DB’s/BB’s/Machines/Cables, heavy, pyramids, 10×10’s, 5×20’s, so many different grips, body positions, etc.

What’s your favourite post-workout meal?

My smoothie:

Directions:
Soak Oats, Dates and Almonds in 80z of water overnight in refrigerator. Then blend until smooth to make “nut/oat milk” base. Then add other ingredients and blend until smooth.

No Gym,
No Problem!

What’s your advice to someone leading a sedentary lifestyle who wants to get fit and what motivational tools do you rely on to remain dedicated to exercising?

Use a vegan trainer.

Have you used a personal trainer, coach or dietician that you would recommend to others?

I have worked out with and learned from trainers, but have never hired one except for BB comps.
I have been training and vegan for over 30 years, so I learned mostly on my own.

How has your plant-based lifestyle influenced others?

Being 56yrs strong, 34yrs Vegan, 100% drug free, Natural Bodybuilding and Natural Physique Champion and owner of Clean Machine combined has gotten attention.
I personally just stay focused on helping others, vegucating and being the best example of what a 55+, drug free, long term vegan can achieve.
